EIGHTEEN

Ana and Apple got dressed in their skimpy club outfits and went out to paint the town red—Partying for Ana was another way of coping with her loss.

“What’s up wit’ that coat?” Ana asked. She had been salivating over that red mink since she first laid eyes on it. “Could I wear it if you’re not?”

“Nah, that’s not a good idea.”

Apple didn’t feel compelled to give Ana an explanation. She didn’t want that coat worn by anyone. Once Mack D was dead, Ana could have it. It meant nothing to her.

“Okay—um, cool. I’m still a pretty bitch.”

Apple smiled. “You look a’ight.”

Ana threw on a pair of dark sunglasses and lipstick to help hide her bruises—new and old. The dim club lights also helped. They hit two nightclubs in the city and drank heavily. They flirted with the men and tore up the dance floor together. The men were almost knocking each other over to buy them their choice of drinks.

They got home an hour before the sun rose. Both girls passed out in the living room. Ana was sprawled out on the couch, and Apple was lying face down on the carpet.

Kola was highly upset. She felt they were setting a bad example to the children. Apple especially wasn’t being a mother to her daughter. Kola took on Apple’s responsibilities and shielded Peaches from her mother’s reckless ways.

And then there was Ana. A lazy, messy bitch. The sink was filled with her dirty dishes, her clothes were everywhere, and she constantly left her wet towels on the bathroom floor. Kola watched Ana with suspicious eyes. She didn’t like the way Ana flaunted herself in front of the brothers when they were home, wearing the tightest shorts and smallest tops, especially around Kamel. It was just weird. Kola wasn’t shy in telling the bitch off. She wasn’t about to kiss her ass because she was Kamel’s little sister.

“You need to clean up after yourself. I ain’t no maid.”

Ana sucked her teeth. “I’ll do it later,” she replied nonchalantly. “You seen Apple?”

“Don’t think I’m stupid. I know what you and her been doing. It needs to fuckin’ stop.”

Ana frowned. “Doing what?”

“Bitch, don’t fuckin’ play stupid with me. My sister was doing fine until you came around. And now she’s out there acting a fool with you.”

“Apple’s a grown woman, Kola. Why you all in your sister’s business?”

“Why are you all up her ass!”

“You jealous cause no one’s up yours!”

“Watch your mouth, little girl.”

Ana sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes. “Ain’t no little girl around here, so don’t get shit twisted. Bitch!”

Ana pivoted and walked away feeling like she’d won the standoff.

Kola kept her composure and didn’t go running after Ana. She knew that if Ana kept popping off at the mouth that she was going to put a serious hurting on her. But not in front of the kids.

Kola went into her bedroom, and the minute she closed her door, she received the text from Mack D asking to see her again.
