As we walk through difficulties in the power of the Holy Spirit, He transforms those problems into a well of life-giving strength for us.

We also can translate the Hebrew word for well as “a place of springs.” Even our most difficult situations can become a spring, a source of life to us as we discover how to abide in Christ in our suffering, drawing on the strength of the Spirit and experiencing His protection. Pain and suffering do not threaten the life of Christ. On the contrary, they become pathways to new springs of comfort and strength as we call on the Holy Spirit during those times of affliction. We learn to go from strength to strength.

Clothing

When the Scriptures refer to the Spirit clothing individuals, they are describing the power of the Holy Spirit to equip. When God chose to use Gideon, for example, as a deliverer for His people, we read, “But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet” (Judg. 6:34). This verse can be translated as, “But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon.” God equipped Gideon for the task He gave him to do when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him.

Jesus told the disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high at the coming of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). The word endued can be translated as “clothed” also. The Holy Spirit clothed the disciples with power to become witnesses to the gospel throughout the world. They were equipped by the Spirit to fulfill the will of God.

Earnest

The word earnest in the Greek refers to the first down payment, which assures the recipient of final payment in full. In modern Greek it means an engagement ring, the token of future marriage from the lover to his prospective bride! Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “Ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession” (Eph. 1:13–14). We have not received the fullness of our inheritance yet, but God gave us the Holy Spirit as a sample of what life will be like when we are fully redeemed. He is the down payment of our inheritance in Christ.

A little child slipped into his mother’s kitchen where she was mixing a rich batter for a special homemade cake. The child stuck his fingers into that batter and then, licking them as he ran out the door, asked when the cake would be done. Having the Holy Spirit in our lives is like the wonderful taste of batter on our fingers; it makes us anticipate the finished cake. As the Holy Spirit brings us into Christ’s presence, He gives us a foretaste of being received as Christ’s bride and enjoying everlasting love and communion with Him.

When Paul describes a people of God who are “sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Eph. 1:13), he is speaking of the Holy Spirit’s work of producing a mark of identification, of ownership, an engraving of a glorious inner work, in His people.
