HALT
Hungry, Angry, Lonely, and Tired = HALT. This is the acronym that many 12-step groups use to help their members remain aware of what leads to a relapse of their dependency or addiction. Two of these are actually physical, while all four are well-known to cause physical disorders such as acid reflux, high blood pressure, infections and allergies, and accidents. Depression and long-term repression of emotions, and a long-term sense of being less than, can aid and abet, if not result in, diminished immune responses to infection, metabolic disorders, and the formation and growth of malignancies.
Here is an example of physical complications of codependency run rampant. The father in this family was in control of it, and the kids knew where the rules were set down and how to follow them. As a mother, Carol was well-intentioned and wanted only the best for her many children, so she disciplined them according to her own strict upbringing. As a wife, she was showcase pretty and compliant to her husband, and she turned a blind eye to his errors and escapades. She was a gracious partner in his quests for higher office and recognition. She was quiet by nature, but much of her life required she be just the opposite.
Carol began her own career of accomplishments, but it was cut short by abdominal cancer. In those days, no one talked directly about cancer to the patient, to each other, or even to the neighbors; it was only between the doctor, the father, and the kids. Cancer was a whisper word. The family hovered around her during her last months of life, but no one said a single word to her regarding her thirty-four-pound weight loss, the painful gold shots she was getting in her abdomen, or the other “treatments” she was getting for her “stomach condition.” Her children gathered together to cook what would be her last Thanksgiving dinner. She was thin, weak, pale, and quiet. They all nervously talked in front of her across the table. No one mentioned her illness in the blessing. Sadly, she later died believing two things: that she did have cancer and that she could trust no one.
