“Hi, Daddy,” I said into the phone. “Isn’t it sort of early out there?”

Adam smirked at my predicament.

“It probably is, but I was in New York yesterday, and I decided to stop by before heading home to see my favorite youngest daughter. The benefit of a company plane is I get to go where I want.”

I needed time to think. “What were you doing in New York, Daddy?”

“Let’s meet for breakfast, and you can ask me all you want about my boring customer meetings.”

My delaying question had failed at its job. “I can’t. I just ate.” At least it was a partial truth.

“Well, you can watch me eat then, while I quiz you.”

What did quiz me mean? “Daddy, I wish I could, but I’m on my way somewhere. Maybe next time you swing by.”

“Sounds like you’re out somewhere already. Where are you? Maybe we could meet in between.”

I could withhold things, but one thing I couldn’t do was lie to Daddy. “I’m in McDonald’s.”

Adam started to shake his head slowly, obviously not approving of me giving out details.

The door to the street slammed, and I jerked in my seat to look over. A gun-toting federal agent was with me, and I still felt paranoid. The thought made me cringe.

“McDonald’s?” Daddy’s voice carried his characteristic curiosity. He was about to pull on the string to unravel a secret. “I thought you swore off McDonald’s after that salad-contamination scare?”

“Yeah, well, it’s on the way, and I needed to get something for a friend.” Technically that was also the truth. We had to get Adam his breakfast.

“A friend sounds interesting. Dennis told me he suspected you were hiding a boyfriend from us. I’d like to meet this friend.”

I’d lost control of the conversation. “I don’t know what Dennis is talking about.”

“I can stick around as long as needed. The three of us can meet for lunch.”

“I can’t.”

“Dinner, then.”

I pulled out the only trump card I could think of. “I promised to spend the day alone with him.” Promises were sacrosanct to Daddy, and this would back him off—I hoped.

He was quiet for a second.

Adam had his chin on his hand, watching me squirm, and the raised corners of his mouth said I entertained him.

“A promise is a promise, so I won’t ask you to break that. Are you going to at least tell me his name?”

“His name? Nope.”

Adam jerked back and shook his head vigorously.

“It’s just a casual date.”

“If you say so. I’ll tell Dennis his hunch was right.”

“No way. I mean…please don’t. He wouldn’t tell me his new girlfriend’s name.”

Daddy didn’t answer right away. With a little luck, I’d just shifted the target of his curiosity. It would serve Dennis right.

“Would I be correct in guessing that your new man is there with you now?”

I didn’t answer.

“I’ll take that as a yes. Tell him I expect him to treat you right.”

I moved the phone away from my face. “Daddy says if you don’t treat me right, he’ll kick your ass all the way to Cleveland.
