In the afternoon, as merienda,

an after-school snack, she made

another two and a half dozen tortillas

while she warmed a bottle for the nene

and sang a romantic ballad en español

to the older ones, who sat

wide-eyed at the table.

At night the same ritual again.

The television roaring,

the girls fighting, Paco bellyaching,

Papi snoring on the couch,

and Mami calmly wiping

the sweat off her brow

with her rolled-up sleeves as she stood

at the kitchen counter

pounding away at the soft dough

stretched out complacently before her,

a smile illuminating her face.
