Chapter 12

The elders were pleased to hear of Adonael’s glorious victory against their toxin tank. The military-minded members of the Council began immediately instructing every unit among the Caelaran warriors to consider tactics like what Adonael had done.

He was hailed as a hero among his people, but he was focused on the situation with Nina. Having prodded the elders again about it, he kept feeling he was being stonewalled. Elder Ezalius told him, “Celestial Mates will get in touch shortly. They’re aware of the situation and are receiving our updates. There’s just a lot of information that needs to be parsed on their end. We’re taking care of it, Adonael.”

The warrior could not help thinking about her. While he mentioned the pod was being recovered, repairing it would take some time. This was not technology powered by Desrara or any other Caelaran mechanism. While there were perfectly adequate technicians available, they would have to work slowly.

A glimmer of hope began to grow in Adonael. He wanted her to spend more time here, to be less resistant to the idea of destiny. After all, she had ended up here thanks to Celestial Mates, hadn’t she? While he couldn’t be sure that there had ever been a successful pairing between a non-Caelaran and a Caelaran, there was no way to tell what the service thought.

Perhaps it wasn’t until the last battle, where they had so successfully routed the Vorkess, that he accepted his belief in prophecy again.

But perhaps it was something else.

“Nina…” he murmured, blinking. He was meditating alone in his chambers, preparing himself for a ceremonial spar tonight—as the victor who had brought glory to his circle of warriors, he would lead the ritual.

Instead of practicing his moves, he thought about the strange woman who had quite literally fallen from the sky for him. One moment he had presciently dreamt of her, the next she was here arguing about whether she was going to stay, and a moment later she somehow managed to connect with his thought-waves.

She was enigmatic, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something truly special here. Perhaps some parts of them were already merging, the result of the bond that had come from the experiences they shared.

A cynic like Akara would have laughed at Adonael. Perhaps that happened between soul-bonded partners, but that was the product of many years of intimacy, not of some sudden spur-of-the-moment flash of flirtation.

He could just imagine the female warrior’s voice. “You’re a strange one, Adonael. First you question our prophecies, then you fixate on this woman.”

He had not had a chance to
