Chapter Eight

Crow

Crow watched Rin pace back and forth in the small supply room. The shifters had cleared the storage space of everything but a table and chair, claiming it was one of the only rooms that locked from the outside. Rin had demanded to be locked in with Crow and that's how they'd stayed for more than an hour.

The shifters couldn't send Crow back, he knew too much now. Would Rin let them hurt him? He'd promised that he wouldn't, but that had been before Crow had stabbed the bear's pack master in the hand.

He hadn't been able to help himself. He'd already been upset, terrified about the life that Rin said was growing inside of him and angry about how everyone was reacting toward him. Like he was the bad guy. All Crow had ever tried to do his entire life was make sure no child ever had to go through what he'd gone through with his mother.

But, the shifters were different from how Crow had imagined. There were the scary ones, yes, but there were also families with children. No different than humans.

Except, he'd forgotten all of that when he spotted the face that had haunted his nightmares. Roscoe. That was what they'd called him, the shifter who Crow's father had challenged for control of his pack. That shifter's grim expression when he returned to Crow's home with his father in a sheet had been burned into his brain.

"Will you let them kill me or will you do it yourself?" Crow asked, partly because he wanted to know and partly because he wanted Rin to stop pacing.

Rin came to a screeching halt like a cartoon version of himself running into a brick wall. "No one is killing you." His voice was so deep it gave Crow the shivers. "You shouldn't have done what you did, but not many of them should be able to blame you. You were surprised by the face of the man who you think killed your father."

"I don't think it," Crow replied, getting to his feet. "I know it." Roscoe was definitely the one. He'd looked sterner back then and a little younger, but Crow couldn't forget those eyes. They'd held something that had looked so much like remorse that Crow had imagined his expression had been a cruel trick.

Suddenly, Rin stiffened and then went to Crow's front, guarding him from the door. Moments later there was a knock and then the sound of the door being unlocked.

"Why knock if they aren't going to wait for an answer?" Crow muttered but Rin shushed him.

Wilder stepped in, he'd yanked his knit cap off at some point and his brown hair stood out in every direction like he'd ran his hands through it several times.

"How is he?" Rin asked.

"He's healing. Logan gives the wound a day or so—"

"But I stabbed him through the hand," Crow blurted.

"Shifter healing," Rin and Wilder replied.

He should've been annoyed but Crow was mostly relieved. If only because he thought it would
