Sweeping the Nation is an annual robotics competition at MIT that challenges engineering students to build a utilitarian and creative trash-picking robot. Students are given an identical kit of components but then must use their imaginations to create the best bot possible. Once the robots are built, the machines are set to task picking up soda cans. Extra points are given to robots that can crush the soda cans before depositing them in designated “goals” or to those that steal trash from their opponent’s side of the field. Robots that advance past the preliminary rounds then face off against each other in a single-elimination round. And what do the winners of Sweeping the Nation receive? A free T-shirt!
