Chapter twenty-three

The summons by my mom were getting closer together. She wrung her hands as she paced in front of me this time. Her face was distressed as she glanced up at me before her eyes traveled back to her river. She had been pacing for the last fifteen minutes. I fidgeted like a young kid as I watched her.

"What is it, mother?" Impatience colored my words, and she cocked her head at me.

"Son, your life it is going to change. You are going to learn something that will change your perspective on some things you thought you knew."

"You know, you could just tell me what it is." I watched her as she continued to pace.

She swallowed hard and stared out over the river to the far banks. She did that a lot, like she wished she could be on that side of the river instead of this side. "Your father, he isn't dead."

My heart dropped out of my ass as her words sunk in. "He what?"

"He's not dead, well, not really." A sad smile pulled at her lips.

"Who is he? Where can I find him? Why would you hide that from me and make me think he died?" I would shake her if she wasn't my mother.

"It's complicated. But we had an agreement. I kept you and he kept your brother."

"You mean a different brother than Lex and the others, don't you?" I could tell. Besides, I was the only child she had with him. Or so I had thought my entire life. "Why are you telling me this now?"

"It's important. Your brother, your twin, he took on the traits of your father. I couldn't keep him here. But you, you look like a demigod."

My head was swimming in the information I couldn't process. Twin? Father?

"But, why now?"

"You've met your brother already. He—he is troubled. They only misunderstand him though, Alexander, you can understand him. You guys share a link. A bond that was never severed. You will be the difference in how all of this turns out. Accept him when the time comes. Your future depends on it. Your support will turn the tide."

I tugged my fingers through my hair, pulling on the ends to cause a bit of pain. She always talked in riddles. I just needed her to tell me who my dad was and who my brother was.

"Who is my father?"

"He is an important man. He rules the horde." She lifted her eyes from her river and looked back at me. She said the words softly, but they hit me like a ton of bricks. It all clicked into place. Tristan. His father, my father. My chest constricted. "Your ravens. They were a gift from him. Your protectors."

I held up my hand. It was all I could hear. I blinked back tears that flooded my eyes. That was why I could read him so well, why I felt a connection to him. Why his power felt familiar. I stumbled back, my back pressed against the large tree on the river bank.
