Sensory Mode Spotter Exercise

Use the following exercise as a score card to help you determine a person’s sensory mode, then craft your approach to them accordingly. To accomplish this you first have to ask the person questions you know they know the answer to and are expected to answer truthfully to. Professional interrogators call this “establishing a baseline,” a set of truthful body reactions that can later be used to trip up a liar. This same process works for initially determining a person’s sensory modality.

Note where the person’s eyes go to when they’re searching for the answer. Accordingly, you’ll want to ask him questions that engage his sense of sight, his sense of hearing, and then his senses of touch and taste. Any question designed to engage his senses will work. Remember, for ninety percent of people, looking to the left means they’re actually remembering something. For example:

“Do you recall what the first car you owned looked like, what model it was?” Responding, he looks up and to the left, recalling the picture of the car in his mind.

“Do you remember what the radio sounded like?” Responding, he looks left and to the side, searching for a remembered sound.

“What kind of seats did it have, leather or fabric?” Responding, he looks left and down, remembering the feel (touch) of the seat.

Now you want to try and engage his right side (imagination) with questions like:

“Can you imagine what a car would be like if it didn’t have wheels and instead flew?” Responding, he looks up and to the right, creating a picture in his mind.

“Did you ever wonder what a flying car’s engine would sound like?” Responding, he looks to right side, trying to imagine the sound.

“Do you think a ride in such a car would be bumpy or smooth?” He looks right and down, trying to imagine what it would feel like.

Keep in mind that these directions are reversed for about ten percent of people, most often lefties. When encountering such a person, use the strategy, simply reversing directions. And, by the way, quick responses where a person immediately gives “right-side” responses to “imagination” questions often means they will be excellent subjects for hypnotism. Pegging a person’s sensory mode as to whether your potential victim (uh, subject) is a Watcher, Listener, or a Toucher is vitally important in order to tailor an effective approach designed specifically to (1) catch their attention, (2) sway their opinion in your direction.

For example, when dealing with a Toucher, don’t talk a mile a minute and don’t waste your time describing how something looks. Instead, let the Toucher feel, smell, or taste the product. Even if you’re trying to sell him a piece of land three states away, bring him a sample of the soil or a pinecone from the site to touch and smell.

When debating, arguing, or NO-gotiating, in order to fluster and frustrate your opponent, deliberately choose opposing sensory modes. If he’s a Toucher, blind him with vivid visual descriptions, wall charts, and descriptive metaphors.
