Archilochus, a poet as well as a soldier, was considered by the Ancients the equal of his contemporary Sappho, but (possibly because he tended to write about war rather than love) he has gotten less attention than he deserves in recent centuries. He was known for his sharp tongue (or pen), and the third-century Greek biographer Diogenes Laertius quoted “a proverb applied to those who revile others”:“You are walking in [that is, being a real] Archilochus.”
