The Tether Incident

Of all videos that are accepted in some circles as genuine UFO evidence, but which probably are not, perhaps the best known was from NASA’s STS-75 mission, more widely known as the Tether Incident. This occurred in late February, 1996, during a mission to carry and deploy a Tethered Satellite System into orbit at around 200 miles, within the Earth’s ionosphere. The purpose of this, among other things, was to demonstrate electrical power generation. The tether was 12.9 miles long and nearly all of it was deployed when it broke while in orbit on February 25, 1996.

A few days later, NASA recorded what looked like a veritable armada of objects moving and maneuvering around the tether. This has been the subject of engaging debate ever since. NASA has maintained that the cameras recorded debris from a recent water dump. Others have argued that the debris in the video appears to go behind the tether, which would clearly be too far away for a water dump. In addition, the video shows so many of these objects, all appearing as pulsing, circular discs, often with a hole in the center, and what appears to be a notch cut out of the edge. Certainly, the fact that they appear to go behind the tether is suggestive that they are real. At the time of the recording the tether was approximately one hundred miles away from the camera. At that distance, any visible object behind the tether would have to be enormous.
