Chapter 6

She’d agreed to dinner, but now was wondering if it had been such a good idea. She was nervous and it almost reminded her of when they first started dating. It kind of was the same. This would be her first time truly seeing him since the whole fiasco with the false pregnancy and her sudden kidney issues. Her feelings on their apparent issues hadn’t changed. He’d cheated on her and now as a result, he was about to be the father to a child that would forever be a reminder of that ultimate betrayal. How could any woman manage to work past that? It would certainly take a big person and Star was certain that she was not that strong of an individual.

He’d called and said that they needed to talk alone and that he’d bring dinner. What difference did it make when they had the conversation? The confrontation was inevitable. Thinking it was best to just go ahead and get it over with, she’d agreed on her way home from work. Now here she was staring in her vanity mirror wondering if he would just go away if she refused to come downstairs to see him. But knowing Black, he’d just come straight upstairs and address her right there in her bedroom. HER bedroom. The room she now occupied alone; without him. The room she intended to continue to occupy alone whether he realized it or not. She couldn’t go back to the way things were. She didn’t know how to even begin to phantom the idea of doing so.

She heard the front door open and close causing her body to tense up. The way he came and went freely was going to have to end. Things needed to change. She hesitated and waited to see if maybe he’d seek her out, but realized that he wasn’t coming up once she heard slight noises from the kitchen. Taking a deep breath and looking at her expression in the mirror once more, Star realized that she was getting old. Her face looked tired and her eyes looked weary. She needed to get it together. Taking her time to get to the kitchen, she descended the stairs and took notice of the pictures that lined the walls along the stairwell. Pictures of them during the one year of marriage that they’d actually been happy and in love made her feel as if she was now living a nightmare or maybe the happiness had really just been the dream. She toyed with the wedding ring sitting loosely on her finger as she entered the kitchen. Standing at the threshold, she watched as her estranged husband plated the Italian food that he’d picked up from Maggiano’s. It was the most natural thing for him to move about with such familiarity in the home they’d built together, but it was also the strangest thing because she no longer knew the man, her husband, that was busying about.

“Hey,” he said, looking over at her as he sat their plates on the quaint kitchen table.
