Chapter Twenty-Three

EVERYONE EXCEPT THE zombie animals followed Syd to the indoor gun range. Ike came with us, since he could wear earmuffs to protect his hearing. Gunfire was uncomfortably loud in an enclosed space even for beings who didn’t have supernatural hearing. Zombies couldn’t feel pain, but ours weren’t fond of the barrage of noise.

“I haven’t used guns much,” Freya said when Sydney took a few different guns down from the pegs on the walls.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle,” the werecougar said with a smirk. Freya had the advantage of being able to scan my mind while Syd was showing her how to use the weapons.

“I bet she’ll be a crack shot,” Alex said glumly. Freya looked over her shoulder with one eyebrow raised. “The spells make me suck at everything except driving and raising zombies,” my sister explained.

“It’s true,” Yas confirmed. “She’s really bad at shooting and fighting.”

Freya couldn’t quite stifle her snicker and Alex huffed out a sigh. “I’ll try not to outshine you too much,” my mate said diplomatically. Syd told her to aim and fire once she had the basics down. I wasn’t at all surprised when Freya hit the bullseye with most of her shots.

“What a surprise,” Alex said with an eyeroll when the testing came to an end and we all took our earmuffs off. “Someone else who can shoot better than me in their first hour than I can after six months of nonstop training.”

“I bet Freya can’t stop time,” Brynn pointed out.

Freya’s mouth opened in shock and Alex brightened slightly. “I guess that’s a pretty awesome talent,” my sister conceded.

My mate scanned my mind for everything I knew about Alex’s abilities. “You’re amazing, Alex,” she said sincerely. “You’ve managed to turn spells that are supposed to suppress your talents into incredible abilities.”

“Wait until you see me on the punching bags,” Alex said glumly. “You won’t think I’m so amazing then.” Yas and Crowmon snickered and she gave them a sour look.

“Now it’s my turn to test Freya’s abilities,” Liam said, opening the door to let us into the main hallway. Syd would return the guns to their pegs later, after she roped us into helping her clean them. Normally, it was my job to test the newbies’ fighting skills. Since my mate and I could read each other’s thoughts, it would be too easy to anticipate each other’s moves.

“Try not to break my twin in half,” I said when we reached the ring and our zombies scampered over to watch. Emma climbed up onto Alex’s shoulder and everyone else picked their mice up. Theta had stayed on Gedniah’s wrist during the weapons training, since he didn’t have ears. I picked Epsilon, Iota and Delta up and held them on my palm.

Freya smirked slightly. “I promise I’ll try not to,” she agreed.

Yas and Ike shared a smug look. “Don’t even think about it,” I warned them.

“What?” the bloodsucker said innocently.

“You two aren’t going to tag-team my mate in the ring.”

“We won’t hurt her too badly,” Ike said.
