I wave to our librarian, Mr. Lucas, and head over to the reading corner where Bo is waiting for me.

I still expect him to jump up into my arms when he sees me (like he did when he lived with my grandma). But now that he’s been trained as a reading dog, Bo sits as still as he can, and waits for me to come to him. Good dog, Bo!

I can tell by the smile on his face and the extra wags in this tail that he still loves, loves, loves me. We exchange kisses and then we both stretch out on the floor. I place my head on Bo’s belly and begin to read.

But even though Frankie Spark books are really good, I don’t get far into the story. I’m too distracted by the slightly pointy, sharp lump in my pocket.

“Can you keep a secret?” I ask Bo. I know he can, so I don’t wait for him to give me a sign.

“Look,” I say, pulling Stella out of my pocket. “David gave her to me.”

Bo gives Stella a big old lick, which makes me giggle. I hope she still has some hair left.

Then I look up and see Mr. Lucas looking at me.

Oh, no! I completely forgot where I was!

He gets up from his chair and heads in my direction.

I quickly squeeze Stella back into my pocket.

Bending down, Mr. Lucas asks, “Twig, are you feeding Bo?”

I quickly shake my head no.

“Since Bo used to belong to your grandma, I know that it must be awfully tempting to feed him treats.”

“I wasn’t. Really! Bo would get sick if everyone fed him,” I say, showing that I remember the reading Dog Rules. “I would hate for Bo to get sick.”
