The Fourth Man

God is not looking for people who have it all together so He can make disciples of them. Study God's track record. Usually He picks those who are least likely, those who have nothing going for them in the natural.

If I had been Jesus, I would never have picked Simon the fisherman as my disciple. The man was a hothead and a boaster who went around shooting off his mouth without the ability to back up what he said by action.

But obviously Jesus is not like you and me. What did He do? He chose a big mouth braggart who was destined to deny Him three times in public, and transformed him into a tower of strength who preached powerful sermons and worked mighty miracles. He took a compromiser and transformed him into a crusader. He took Simon (whose name meant "reed") and transformed him into Peter (whose name meant "rock").

If God can take a reed and turn it into a rock, then there is hope for you and me.

Captivity Turned, Life Restored

...the Lord thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations....

If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the Lord thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:

And the Lord thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.

And the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

Deuteronomy 30:3-6

As we have seen, God is a master at turning failures into champions, curses into blessings, mourning into joy, weeping into dancing, sackcloth into garments of gladness, slavery into freedom.

God's ability never ceases to amaze me. He has the marvelous capacity to take people who are being held in bondage and turn their captivity. He can turn their exile and bring them into the land that their fathers possessed, there to do them good and to multiply them all the days of their lives. He can take the people who in the natural are the least likely to succeed, and cause them to flourish and prosper.

If He can do all that, God can turn your captivity into freedom. He can elevate you to a level of position you have never known before. I know this is true from personal experience.

Do you realize that in 1969 I was a body man. I repaired wrecked automobiles. That was my profession. I owned my own auto body repair shop. That's what my father had done before me, and that was what I had always envisioned myself doing. It was the height of my ambition in life. And I loved it.

But in that year I answered the call of God that I first heard at the age of twelve.
