“For God and Home and Native Land”

This popular 1880s temperance song, written by Mrs. E. P. Moffitt of the Illinois WCTU, echoed the aim of godly nation-building expressed by older Benevolent Empire societies.

We are coming in our might, To boldly battle for the Right,

Against King Alcohol and band;

Our flag we’ll ne’er forsake, But our stand we’ll bravely take,

For God and Home and Native Land.

[refrain] Old King Alcohol, We’ll let you surely know

We’re coming with our ballots white as snow;

You cannot flourish long in a cause so sadly wrong,

For we’re coming, coming, thirty million strong.

For the offices of state, Our boys and girls we’ll educate,

Then all our homes we shall protect;

Then sober men and true, Who will put our measures through,

To ev’ry office we’ll elect. [refrain]

Then will be no bleeding hearts, Caused by Rum’s destroying darts,

When come these glorious temperance days;

Oh, speed the happy time, In ev’ry land and clime,

And we to God will give the praise! [refrain]
