Uneven Lies

Just as with other short-game shots, the key to getting good results from bad lies starts and ends with your setup. Whether you’ve got an uphill stance or a downhill stance, the most significant change in your method is to make sure your weight counterbalances the slope. It is wise to take a practice swing to see where the club is making contact with the grass. You can then adjust to your new ball position to fit the slope. Here are some things to watch for:

1 Use more club. In other words, using a pitching wedge instead of a sand wedge allows you to swing in a comfortable speed that enables you to maintain your balance despite the awkward slope. You cannot effectively control distance and direction if you are not in balance.

2 Set your weight distribution to counterbalance the slope. In short, for an uphill shot, your weight should be concentrated on your left foot. For a downhill shot, keep your weight on your right foot. When the ball is above your feet, your weight needs to be forward to the balls of your feet, and you need to grip down on the club. When the ball is below your feet, your weight needs to be on your heels, and you need more knee flex and a wider stance.
