âThe new Queen has a great deal of energy, does she not?â Anne murmured as they climbed the stairs back to her chambers that night. âThe court seems very lively these days.â
âYes, my lady,â Pippa agreed cautiously, knowing that Anne probably couldnât help but compare herself. âAlthough, I confess, itâs a little too lively for me, not to mention the King. He retired to bed after the Masque.â
âI wish I could have done the same. Itâs been a long day.â Anne sighed as Pippa closed the door to her bedchamber behind them. âBut the Queen is a kind lady. The King gave her a present of a ruby ring and she handed it straight to me. I believe that sheâs trying to make me feel welcome as a sister.â
âI think that youâre right, my lady.â
âI noticed Sir Christopher across the room, too.â Anne gave her a surreptitious glance. âI thought that he might come and speak to us, but he left quickly.â
âYes, my lady, I noticed that as well.â She swallowed, trying not to remember how incredibly handsome heâd looked. Seeing him again, even from across a crowded room, had been even more painful than sheâd expected. Seeing him side by side with Lady Cecily, looking like a pair of golden swans, had made her feel as though sheâd been kicked hard in the ribs. Sheâd done her best not to look at him again afterwards, yet sheâd been aware of his every gesture and movement, including his terse exchange with his brother.
âPippa.â Anne sounded hesitant. âI know itâs none of my business, but have the two of you quarrelled?â
âNot exactly, but I told him...â Pippa pursed her lips... âThat is, when he visited at Christmas, I made it clear that an alliance between the two of us would be impossible.â
âAh. Youâre certain of that, then?â
âYes. I made sure that he believed it, too.â
âWell, then...you go to bed. Hansi will undress me tonight.â
âThank you, my lady, but if you donât mind, I think perhaps I might take a walk outside instead. Iâd like to clear my head after all the noise. Iâm afraid Iâve become used to the peace and quiet of Richmond.â
âOf course.â Anneâs smile suggested that she understood perfectly. âOnly donât go too far and donât stay out in the cold too long either. Iâll see you in the morning.â
