Volcanic Activity

Scientists describe volcanoes as being active, dormant (DOR-munt), or extinct (ek-STINKT).

The biggest known active volcanoes are on Mars.

Active volcanoes are ones that have recently erupted or could erupt soon. Scientists think there are around 500 active volcanoes on land. There are more than 1,500 beneath the sea!

Dormant volcanoes have not erupted in a long time but could erupt again.

Dormant comes from dormire, the Latin word for “to sleep.”

Extinct volcanoes are ones that have not erupted for thousands of years and scientists think will never erupt again.
