Chapter Twenty-Six

Tryst

If this had been a regular divorce, we would have gone our separate ways and after a year or so, we could have been done and dusted with the whole thing. I didn’t want anything from Remzi, except for all this to be over.

My Omega whined at the obvious lie. She wanted something from her Alpha, but wanting someone who didn’t want you in return was an exercise in heartache, especially when we had so many amazing mates.

Still, she’d felt the bond in my chest, that ache that said for just a moment, he’d wanted us too. That was the hardest part. He’d bitten me, bonded me, fucked me during my first heat. That had meant something, and it made this whole circus twice as hard.

I sat up at a table beside Keisha, my guys in the row behind me. Remzi was on the other side of the courtroom, studiously staring at the Superior Court’s coat of arms like it was going to come to life and chew him out for being such an idiot.

We weren’t regular divorcés. What we had wasn’t made to be separated by the law or by anything in nature.

The lawyers argued, using concepts that I didn’t really understand, in convoluted jargon that was part English and part Latin, but was basically deciding not only my future with Remzi Hart, but the future of all Omegas.

That was what Keisha Kelly wasn’t telling her DoDA counterpart, but had whispered to me in secret. She’d met with Remzi Hart’s lawyers before the trial, and one thing they’d agreed on was that if we came out of this trial with more rights for Omegas, the results for their individual clients would be an added bonus.

Which made me feel a little bad for wanting to bite Remzi’s lawyer’s fingers off. So as they talked about constitutional transgressions and fundamental rights in a courtroom packed to the rafters with people, I couldn’t stop my gaze from drifting to Remzi.

He looked rough.

Don’t get me wrong, he was still breathtakingly handsome, but his face was drawn and there were dark circles under his eyes. His back was ramrod straight, and his jaw was flexed so tight that I hoped he had a good dentist on the books.

I’d been practicing discerning whose bonds were whose in my chest. I mean, I logically knew there wasn’t a golden cord attached from my heart to each of them or anything like that, but the emotional connections sat heavily in my chest. Grady’s was steady and sure, while Corrin’s was a little wild. I’d had theirs the longest, so they were the easiest to feel.

The Alpha bonds were a little stronger. Kacey’s bond was almost like a heady darkness, filled with coiled violence and the promise of pleasure. He was like being strapped to bed, blindfolded, and feeling a paddle brush against your ass.

Not that I knew what that felt like, but it was the only way to describe it.

The twins were the newest, so I was better at grabbing hold of Akio’s and Jak’s bonds, and they were easy enough to tell apart.
