Chapter 8
Ezra pulled into the last remaining parking space along the street where Carrolton and Claiborne Avenues intersected. He waited for a streetcar to pass before crossing the neutral ground—what the rest of the country called the median—that divided the two sides of the street, and continuing on to the park. As he made his way there, he looked around for Mackenna’s car. When he’d called earlier to let her know he was on his way, it had gone straight to voicemail. He received a text a minute later, with word that she was in an emergency meeting with a client at the Arts Council and would meet him at the park when she was done.
Even as he’d fought off disappointment at losing out on the chance to pick her up, Ezra knew it was for the best. The more distance that stretched between them, the better. One of the lessons he’d learned yesterday was that, when it came to Mack, his ability to resist temptation was virtually non-existent.
Yesterday had been…interesting.
As he’d stood in her bedroom, Ezra was sure that, with just a little more effort, he could have convinced Mack to show him much more than just her copy of Kindred. He’d seen it in her eyes; they’d held the same desire that pulsed through him every time he so much as thought about her.
His mind was still experiencing whiplash from the complete one-eighty he’d undergone in these last few weeks. For years Mackenna had been an unattainable fantasy he’d admired from afar. From those days when she was that beautiful, brilliant college student who used to visit with Indina, to when she married one of the most recognizable faces in New Orleans, she remained so far out of his reach that Ezra purposely kept his distance. If he knew beforehand that she was joining his family for some type of gathering, he would come up with an excuse for why he couldn’t make it. And if they so happened to end up in the same space, he gave her a wide berth.
It was just easier that way. Why put himself through the agony of seeing her when he knew he could never have her?
Once she and Carter divorced it was the fact that she’d become a politician that kept him away. He’d had too many negative experiences with politicians during his career to ever fully trust one. But, over the past few weeks, every minute he spent with Mack created a small fissure in the wall of distrust he instantly erected whenever he encountered a politician.
Because the more he was around her, the harder it was to think of her as a politician. Like the other night, as he sat beside her on the floor in her condo. It had been hard as hell to concentrate on the transcripts he should have been reading when what he’d really wanted to do was push those papers away and lay her body down on the carpeted floor. He’d envisioned himself
