Chapter Five

Jackson climbed from the cab then remembered he didn’t have his wallet with him. His anger had cooled a little but he wanted to punch someone or something and not having any cash or a key to get into his apartment wasn’t helping. He stood outside his building and waved at the doorman. When the uniformed man stared at him, he smiled. “I forgot my wallet. If you fix up the cab, I’ll give you two hundred bucks.”

The man ran down the stairs and paid the cab driver. Jackson led the way inside the building. “You’ll have to let me upstairs too. I have cash inside. My brother’s babysitting so he’ll open the door for me.”

“Not a problem, Mr. Moon.” The doorman followed him to the elevator and pressed his card to the reader.

“Come upstairs with me.” Jackson stepped into the elevator.

At his apartment door, he knocked a few times. “Joel it’s Jackson.”

The door opened and Joel peered around the door.

“Have you lost your key?”

“Nope, I lost Rogue.” He turned to the doorman. “I’ll be right back.”

He strode down the hallway pausing for a second to peek into Jack’s room. His son was sleeping, with his thumb tucked inside his mouth. A strange sensation gripped his heart at the thought of losing his son and the new baby due in the next few months. His children needed two parents, two loving parents. He shook his head and went to the bedroom to collect the cash.

“You look like shit.” Joel walked into the bedroom behind him. “What happened?”

“I’ll explain as soon as I’ve had a shower.” Jackson pushed two hundred into Joel’s hand. “Pay the doorman for me so I can wash this stink off.”

“No worries.” Joel strolled back to the front door.
