Chapter 13

The sun had already been up for a long time when Leith stopped the car and turned off the engine. As a vampire, Eleanor had a built-in sensor telling her if the sun was up or about to crest the horizon, but she didn’t need it to know that the sun was shining. The black plastic and blankets were doing an excellent job of protecting her, but she could still see the glow of light through the material.

Henry had slept or pretended to sleep for most of the three hours they had been on the road. He might not have had much time to sleep in the last few days, but she suspected the main reason his eyes were closed was to avoid talking to her.

Eleanor bit her bottom lip to try to contain the ache in her chest. The tears that filled her eyes were threatening to spill down her cheeks, and she kept her head turned away from him just in case they did. She hadn’t expected him to proclaim his undying love for her, but she had expected more of his affection than this after seeing his grin when she had told him she didn’t know how to break the bond between them.

“Well, we have finally arrived.” There was a smile in Leith’s voice. “I am afraid you two lovebirds will have to tear yourself away from each other for a little while. I have parked with your side of the vehicle facing away from the sun, Henry, so you will be able to get out without hurting your girlfriend.”

“Good. Thank you, Leith.” Henry’s voice lacked any kind of emotion. “I’ll have someone guard the car to make sure you’re safe.” His statement was obviously directed at her, but she couldn’t look at him. And without touching her or saying another word, he opened the door and got out.

The door shut behind him, and she had never felt so abandoned in her life. Fisting her hands so hard her nails dug into her palms, she tried to prevent her tears from falling, but it was like fighting the tide. They flowed down her cheeks like a dam had broken.

She heard Leith and Sabrina get out of the car and close the doors behind them, which left her alone with what felt like a hole in her chest instead of a heart. If only she could have left and gotten out of there. It was what she wanted.

Stupid woman. Henry has just had a massive shock and needs time to process. Get a grip.

She took a deep breath and tried to listen to the rational part of her mind. But it was hard to ignore the pain in her chest, and the deep craving inside her for Henry’s affection and approval.

Only hours had passed since she had been dead set against giving in to Henry. But
