The Lady in Gray

Many of those who have visited this cemetery have a shared experience. While walking among the graves, they see a young woman dressed in what looks like a traveling suit from the Civil War era. The woman is always dressed completely in gray, hidden beyond a gray veil, and carrying a small, clean, white handkerchief. A gray veil always seems to hide her face.

She may be seen standing over one of two particular graves, her head bowed as if she is weeping. One of the graves over which she has been seen to linger is that of the Unknown Soldier, while the other belongs to a Benjamin F. Allen from the 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Fresh flowers are often spotted at the graves after a sighting of her.

Others have witnessed her literally walking through the trees surrounding the cemetery or through the closed iron gate at night. Her identity is uncertain, but many refer to her simply as The Lady (or Woman) in Gray. When she is approached, she simply disappears. Others have noticed she is almost transparent as they are able to see through her dress well enough to distinguish the shape of headstones behind her.

One particular moving incident occurred during a Civil War re-enactment in 1988. Onlookers enjoying the historical action reported hearing the sound of a woman weeping. Concerned someone might be injured, an attempt was made to find the source of the mournful cries, but none was found.

Some have noted as the cries began, several tents and lightweight tables were blown over in a sudden, inexplicable gust of wind. Those familiar with the history of the Camp Chase Cemetery believe it was The Lady in Gray, disturbed by the recreation.

Some believe the ghost is a woman named Louisiana Ransburgh Briggs, a Southerner whose father sent her north for her education as the war broke out. She eventually married a Yankee (northerner). After the Civil War was over, she would place flowers on the graves of the Confederate soldiers out of respect and acknowledgement of her heritage; however, she would dress in all black with a heavy veil to hide her identity so it would not mar her husband’s reputation.

Later on her identity was revealed and she then began to work to restore the cemetery. Could it be she still watches over it from beyond, still tossing flowers onto the graves of men who seem to be forgotten?
