“You came back! You want to play Secret Mega Orbs?”

When Gabby stormed into the Lost and Found, Trymmy had been sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall and distractedly sucking the end of a long mole. Now he was on his feet and smiling wide.

“I can’t….” Gabby was breathless from her sprint back to campus, and had to rest her hands on her thighs to gasp in more air. “I just need…to talk to you…I need the book back.”

“What book?”

“The cookbook. I’ll replace it with another one. You can even hold my knapsack until I do.” Gabby slipped the knapsack off her shoulders, took a second to dig out and pocket her keys and thumb drive, then held it out to him.

Trymmy shook his head—a move that didn’t budge his tall corona of hair in the slightest. “I can’t.”

“Of course you can!”

“No. I can’t. I don’t even have the cookbook anymore.”

“Trymmy, you have it. I just gave it to you!”

“I know,” Trymmy said, pushing his glasses back up his wide-potato nose, “but it already went back to my collection.”

“What?”

“Remember when your knapsack appeared after you answered the riddle?” Trymmy asked. “It’s the same thing, only the opposite. When you gave me the cookbook, it poofed away into my collection.”

Gabby shook her head. “That’s crazy. I would have seen that. I would have noticed if I handed you a cookbook and it disappeared.”

Trymmy shrugged. “Humans see what they want to see. If something doesn’t make sense to them, they ignore it or pretend it’s something else. How else do you think aliens have been around so long without most of you knowing we’re here?”

It was a good point. Gabby couldn’t guarantee that the book hadn’t poofed away without her registering it. “Okay,” she said, smacking her palms down on her jeans, “how do we get it back?”

Trymmy grinned mischievously. “You answer a riddle.”

“Trymmy, this is important. No.”

“It’s not my choice,” Trymmy insisted. “It’s how it works. I’m a Troll. You let me take the book, so if you want it back, you have to answer a riddle.”

Gabby scrunched her fingers into her curls with a frustrated groan, then dropped them down again. “Fine. Give me the riddle. I’ll solve it right now.”

Trymmy widened his magnified eyes and raised his unibrow. “Gabby! That’s not how it works. You don’t get the riddle right away. I’ll e-mail it to you.”

“When?!” Gabby wailed.

“It won’t be that long,” Trymmy said.

They both noticed the sudden increase in noise outside the Lost and Found. It could only mean students were pouring off the fields and filing past them toward the classrooms.

“I gotta go,” Trymmy said. “You coming?”

Gabby didn’t want to go anywhere without the cookbook, and she certainly didn’t want to go to school and face Madison, but she didn’t really have a choice. She walked out of the Lost and Found, but the minute they got outside they were met by a sweet-as-honey voice.
