Rhett

We finalised our plan while she slept. I would much rather have watched her sleep, but we had to have a contingency should her power not manifest and we found ourselves in a tight spot. So, we transported her home, saw her comfortable in our bed, and got to work. Our priority was to keep her safe and I had taken every eventuality I could come up with into account.

“And if all else fails?”

“We run.”

Amos looked at me with disbelief. “Run?”

“Her response to Nicky’s attack was to defend herself and us. If we are discovered and confronted, I expect that placing her in a flight scenario will encourage her power to come to the fore.”

Silas picked up the aerial image of the site again. “And if we’re trapped?”

“It is her palace. Her power should be strongest there, so I do not expect to find ourselves trapped. I believe we are in far more danger outside the building’s perimeter. However, since the building is in ruins, there are ample escape routes. So, should we encounter an ambush and we are magically compromised, we run.”

Amos was silent. It was clear he was not convinced. “Have you a better suggestion?”

“We could always just disappear with her.”

Amos laughed. “Silas, you know that is not an option.”

I had considered the possibility more than once. To spare her, and us, the life that awaited was certainly more tempting than returning to Duat. But I knew she had accepted her identity. I knew she had accepted her destiny. She may not be enthusiastic about it, but she had made the decision to give up her life here. She would not change her mind. It was up to us to get her back there and to help her restore balance to the worlds.

“No. She would not thank us for it. She has accepted her fate and is prepared to do whatever is necessary to restore order to Duat. It is our responsibility to get her safely over, not to interfere in her choices. You must remember your place, Silas.”

“My place? I’m in my place, Rhett, doing my job. You’re the one insisting on endangering her.”

I caught Amos’s side glance. His warning to let it slide. If Maia weren’t sleeping upstairs, I would have had something to say but he was right, it was not worth the argument. The last thing she needed was to wake up to us in the throes of a debate over her safety.

Of course I didn’t want to put her in danger, but the fact remained that she was very much needed back in Duat. She was needed by more than just us. The longer the hall was without her, the more power Set gained, the sooner the impact would be felt on earth. Millions of lives would be lost. “That is—”

“A lie, yes, Rhett, I’m well aware of—”

Amos slammed the aerial photograph of the site down in front of him. “Will you two just shut the fuck up? This is bigger than us, it’s bigger than her.
