The thing growled deep in Jackâs chest. Low and feral, it was aimed at the mouth of the cave. Though neither it nor Jack could see the approaching men and women, the thing still knew exactly who was about to enter.
Crouching low in preparation to strike, its fur stood high up on end as it released another growl. The idea of anyone trespassing into its haven was enough to make it territorial. The lethal group running their way, though, they were enough to make it feral. Lunging, the thing vowed, Iâll kill them all.
Gritting his teeth, Jack barely managed to keep the beast from rising. Even so, his eyes blazed with the fires of Niflhel and his face half-twisted into the burning ethereal of the thingâs form. Luckily, Charlie was staring in the direction of the faint screams, too distracted to notice.
As soon as he managed to shove it back down, Jack pinned it with a scowl. Behave. If she sees you, sheâll run screaming and you know it. Mate or not, no one looks at you without fear.
There was a flash of pain, so alien to the normal anger of the thing, that Jack nearly apologized for being harsh. He didnât though. If he gave it any leeway, it would slaughter his teammates one by one. It didnât matter that Jack had fought side by side with them for decades; all the thing saw were potential threats to its mate.
After all, Rogan was tasked with bringing Charlie in for interrogation. Matakyli was a reckless demoness who had it out for Jack and wouldnât mind using his mate to hurt him. The third, Aisla, was a lady with a temper who could match even the godsâ and right now, she was pissed. The fourth, Cariad, was a smoking hot incubus who could melt even an icy kultara, and the fifth â
Jack snorted. So thereâs the real reason. He would have laughed had the thing not been serious about killing them all for it.
Shaking his head, he turned his attention to Charlie. âCome on.â
When he grabbed her hand, his eyes heated at the spark of electricity. He knew she felt it too with the way her lips parted with desire. He wanted so badly to pull her into his arms and finish what theyâd started, but the slight panic in her gaze held him off.
Her body might crave him, but it seemed her mind had yet to agree. Irritated, Jack dragged her along a bit faster than she could walk.
When they made it to the mouth of the cave, Charlie made a noise deep in her throat. It was a sound of sheer frustration, Jack knew, but that didnât stop him from recalling the softer moans she had been making earlier.
âHow?â she wondered, a bit breathless.
Jack nearly pulled her back into his arms before he realized his folly. Charlie was asking about how they had managed to get here so quickly, not how her moans were throwing his mind into the gutter.
