Fenar

A sharp whistle cut through the cacophony of the training ground. Weapons clattered to the ground as the four Legion Heads appear on the viewing platform. My fists clenched at my side as I felt the cool gaze of Head Lamott sweep over me. I could tell from the distance that there was no flare of recognition. Even if Wellyn was here, I doubt he would react. He was a machine, focused on growing the power of Lamott and the two sub-houses, Filay and Hoppe. The thin gold circlet of a Legion Head flattened the copper curls of his hair. I wanted my wolf to tear it off his head. It was a travesty that he could hold a position of power after what he did to my brother. He murmured something to his son Ronen, who stepped forward and pointed to a group of top tier fighters. Tallis snorted next to me, and I cut him a quick look.

“Figures. Brute strength is all Lamott cares about,” he sneered under his breath. The fighters Head Lamott was discussing preened under the obvious favor being shown to them.

“Let them. They use every muscle except the one in their thick skulls. We must focus on being chosen for Head Aydro’s team,” I said under my breath. Head Aydro was searching the training ground with Ambrose, who was advising his mother with a finger twirling his mustache.

My chest squeezed a little at the thought of not being chosen for the Vinko. I would prefer to fight for Tallis’s sub-house Kerys, or the other sub-house Trellys, but there was no point. They didn’t have the resources and it was better to pool with a stronger allied house to ensure success.

I didn’t miss the loaded looks Head Avanti and Head Lamott shared and Tallis hummed under his breath. “That’s concerning. They are normally much better at hiding their alliance.”

There were four Legion Heads. With only three Head families, the fourth Head was chosen from a sub-house. Head Avanti won the last Vinko, so the fourth Head was chosen from his sub-house, Custray. Head Custray leaned over the railing, her dark eyes missing nothing. She had a sharp tongue but a considering mind, not that it mattered. Head Avanti held the genuine power, and she deferred to him, no matter that the gold circlet glinting in the light gave her power.

Ambrose motioned to Tallis and me, and my brother gritted his teeth at being summoned like a peasant.

“Play nice, Tallis, we can’t do a thing if we don’t get chosen. And that’s far likelier to happen if you scorch Head Aydro’s precious heir.”

I looked at him, rolling my eyes at his thunderous face. He’d been in a horrible mood all day. I knew how deep his resentment of Ambrose went, his former best friend. Still, he had to put his animosity aside for the bigger picture. Aydro needed to win. We were outnumbered by rival houses who were all gunning to squash us.

“See mother, you recall Tallis Kerys and his triad mate, Fenar.
