Alvarick

The room at the inn was eerily similar to the one in Abilwyn's brothel. Celastian steel plates marked the sliding steel doors on the north and east walls. There were no windows, only skylights to let in the weak winter sun. There was already a tether to hang a shield above the queen-sized bed.

"Elfkin! Welcome!" Garq's low rumble scared the young elf Werl had acquired in the marketplace. They stood in front of the bureau in the west corner. "I was very stealthy on my inner wings. The skylights were easy to open, as you said."

"Glad you made it with no trouble." Velden bowed to them. "Has anyone stopped by the room while we were out?"

"No. There is one who was here and is still here. I said she must stay until you arrived."

"She?" Velden asked. "We don't have any female Kites in Farbonnur Bay, do we?"

Werl shook her head. She stripped the young elf of her pack and tossed it beside the bed. Then, she sank onto it and pulled off her riding boots. They'd all worn full travel clothes over their armor, from cloaks and clothes to belts and boots.

"Let's see." Velden gestured for Garq to open the bureau.

Alvarick expected someone to flee, or to hide. He didn't expect to see an elf with thick golden ringlets seated on the floor of the empty bureau with her arms wrapped around her knees.

"Who are you?" Werl asked, her voice almost a purr.

Alvarick shivered as a name he'd hoped to never speak again flew off his tongue like a curse.

"Melanthe," Velden said at the same time.

Velden stepped forward, grabbed her arm, and pulled her from the wardrobe.

"The better question is, why are you here?" Velden dropped his arm at an angle to release the dagger from his sleeve, poking her flesh just above the elbow. "Any wrong answers, and I will kill you."

"Kemri. I'm hiding from Kemri. Marve's running the inn for me while things settle down, and this is the least used room. How did you all get up here?" She glanced at the platform, where the Celastian steel pulley was still glowing from their proximity.

She glared at Alvarick. "I never expected to see you again. You've caused a lot of trouble around here."

"No thanks to you." Alvarick held her gaze until she looked away.

"When you escaped the Veneration in Abilwyn, they came after me. They stole everything from the coffers and said they're done making deals with me."

Velden nodded. "Good. At least you'll no longer profit from betraying your own kind."

"He is not my kind!" She tried to pull her arm away from Velden and earned a tiny bead of blood where his dagger broke the skin.

"You're both elves." Werl crossed her arms. "If you say one foul word against boys who like other boys, I will make you relive your first pillow party with another girl."

Melanthe studied her for a moment, and her cheeks tinged pink. "Blood mage."

"Former," Werl said. "I'm Dashalin now, like these two. But I've never cared much what parts someone has as long as they know how to use them.
