Acceptance of the Lord

Verse 2

I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Such a wonderful promise should certainly not be refused. Accordingly, the believer does respond, accepting the gracious invitation: “I will say of the Lord [Hebrew Jehovah], he is my refuge and my fortress: my God [Hebrew Elohim]; in him will I trust.”

Two little-used names of God were used in the first verse, but the two most-used names appear in the second verse. God is all, and in all, and it takes many names to adequately describe His attributes, many figures of speech to describe His relation to the believer. The figure of the refuge and fortress would certainly be meaningful to Moses. In his last word to the tribes, he had told them: “The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27). Though neither the Children of Israel in the wilderness nor the Christian pilgrim in this age could ever dwell securely in a literal fortress, the Lord himself surrounds them, that “we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast” (Heb. 6:18–19). With such promises as surety, the seeking soul can sit down in confident faith. “In him will I trust!”
