Chapter 12: Daniel

In the morning, the sunlight peeped through the curtains that they had forgotten to close. The thin sliver of golden light moved with infinitesimal speed along the wall as the dawn grew brighter.

Daniel had never been one for sleeping in. He knew that some people thought he was pompous, or that he liked being looked up to just a little too much. That had always been a problem in his office as the mayor of South Pines. Townsfolk who had grievances against him had accused him of being in it only for the glory of being in charge.

But he knew that wasn’t it at all. He’d always been a hard worker. Most people didn’t see it, because that was always the story when you did things for other people. They wanted to take what they could get, and then dash away as quickly as possible so they didn’t have to get stuck in the position of being grateful. He knew that.

Mike had gotten so upset back when Daniel had joked with the wolves about blocking the city permits for the Cave & Claw Emporium. But it had never been more than a joke. It had been a piece of savvy statesmanship, in fact, gaining an alliance with the Wilson brothers’ pack. For some reason, though, the whole episode had become a town byword for corruption. What was that about? There were people who said that Daniel McCabe would take advantage of any situation if it benefited him.

That was a lie.

He’d always been up with the dawn, his whole life long, working to make South Pines a better place. And today would be no exception.

Daniel shifted slightly in his position on the king-sized bed. He moved his arm from Janie’s long, lean back. He couldn’t help sneaking a peek at the lines of her breasts as they curved into the soft sheets. The corners of his mouth turned up at the memory of her sensuality and the way they had interlaced themselves last night.

Just the slight motion of his body caused her to stir, though, and it was only another moment before she was sitting up. She tossed her long, loose hair over her shoulder in an absent-minded gesture that he had seen a hundred times before.

Why had he never realized how sexy it was?

He knew he was staring, but he couldn’t stop. Everything about her was riveting. The smooth curve of her shoulders, the way her strong jaw moved as she turned toward him, ready to speak. He found himself as still as he could be, wondering what she was going to say. Would it be romantic? No, that wasn’t her style. Brisk?

Janie sent him a quizzical look, then reached out one hand and lightly slapped at his shoulder. “Geez, Daniel, quit staring. Didn’t you see enough last night?”

“Not even close,” he answered honestly. “I’d like to see more of you.”

She burst into laughter. “You sound like you’re asking me for a date. You remember we’re married, right?”

“I didn’t know it was going to be like this.
