John Fowier grabbed her by the arm. “Get Mr. Bodanza out of this!” Walking in a stoop, they coaxed Mr. Bodanza back to the Mercedes, where he took a pill from his pocket and swallowed it.

A few gnats flew up from Suzy’s hands where they’d been fucking their brains out and dispersed around the car. She didn’t have the energy to squash them.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Some devilment. Those kids,” Gelia said, watching Mink and Ink dance along the ridge and the nighthawks swoop screaming through the air over the construction site.

Ernest pointed. “There’s Rae’s friend, laughing on the machine.”

She looked. He’s a nice big one. Not scared of the nighthawks, either, she noted with approval. Good gravy, that girl’s lucky. She wanted a closer look.

“Have you met him?” Ernest said, as if he’d read her mind.

“I ain’t yet.” She grinned at Ernest. She was wearing the pink hot pants, and she knew she looked her best. “Shall we?”

Ernest glanced sideways at her. “Raedawn will have something to say about it.”

She raised her eyebrows at him. “And? So?”

“And so I would appreciate it if you quarrelled with her out of my hearing,” he said in his most precise manner. “Wait til the whistle blows. They have to work yet awhile.”

The old sweetie. Adorable when he was jealous.

They waited. The workmen clambered among their two-by-four cement forms. The bucketloader bumped around. Gelia felt disgruntled. Construction workers look so darn good in blue jeans. She’d kept her hands off this bunch, though it tested her sorely, on account of Rae’s claim and the urgent business at hand. Rae’s claim, Rae’s man. She watched him handle his machine. The long lever-controls of the big machine looked just the right size in his hands. It depressed her all over again to know she wouldn’t be breaking him in. Thing like that didn’t happen every day. How could she trust Raedawn to manage it?
