“Oh, those claws are just for show,” Fixit responds. “That’s why they’re so shiny and sharp—he never uses them in battle. Brakepad was a very successful thief back on Cybertron. His optics emit a powerful hypnotic laser light that makes everybot in his line of sight obey his every command. The mind-control effects wear off as soon as he leaves the vicinity, but they leave behind a powerful feeling of laziness that takes several cycles to dissipate.”

“That explains why Bee and the others don’t seem to care about anything,” Rusty says. “They must have found Brakepad and had their energy sapped!”

“So how do we snap the bots out of it and make sure this doesn’t happen the next time they try to capture Brakepad?” Denny asks.

Fixit knits his optics together in thought and resumes tapping away at his console. “Aha!” he exclaims.

“Did you find something?” Rusty asks.

“Yes!” Fixit responds. “The prisoner manifest includes instructions on how to dampen Brakepad’s powers. There’s a simple machine that loops the signals he gives off and puts him into a deep sleep instead of affecting other bots.”

“That’s perfect!” Denny replies. “How do we get started?”

Fixit frowns. “We would need several component parts that aren’t available in this solar system. Fortunately, it looks like Brakepad’s signal hasn’t moved far from his original pod. His laziness is legendary. It’s unlikely he will become a pressing threat to Crown City before Bumblebee, Strongarm, and Grimlock shake off the effects of his powers. Although they won’t be able to get close to him again without getting lazy all over again.…”

Rusty looks at his dad for a moment. “Fixit, did you say that Brakepad never uses his sharp claws and is famous for being slow?”

“I did, Russell Clay. He is only an effective thief because other bots can’t resist his power-sapping hypnotic vision.”

“So a bot that couldn’t see him would be immune, right?”

“That seems to make sense, yes,” Fixit replies.

“Dad, you may not like this,” Rusty says, “but I think I have a plan for how the two of us can capture this Decepticon. And we’re going to need your new toys and a gallon of black paint to pull it off!”
