CHAPTER 16

Roslyn

I’m sitting at the kitchen table writing out a postcard to send to my dad. I think he’d like it up here in New England. Breakfast ended a while ago. Snowbie’s taking notes in her book while Brooks and Ashley get things ready to go into slow cookers.

Ring. Ring. Ring. My cell phone rings beside me.

“Hello?” I shake my head as I answer.

Seeing Brian’s name on the display saddens me. I haven’t thought about him that much at all. Once I realized that there’s no future with him and made the decision that the relationship is over, he left my thoughts. The occasional guilt that creeps in when I think about Nicholai is because I haven’t told Brian yet. Sometimes I really hate being a hard-core rule follower.

“Roslyn? Do you miss me yet?” Brian laughs. “I wanted to remind you that you need to be home by tomorrow for my dinner at the university.”

I exhale deeply. “I’m sorry, Brian. I won’t be back in time.”

“I knew I shouldn’t have let you go on this trip. Why are you screwing this up for me? Stop being a bitch, Roslyn. It’s time to come home.” He huffs in anger.

I watch Nicholai walk into the room and it causes me to lose my words. He stops beside me. Smiling as he caresses my shoulder.

“I have to go, Brian.” I disconnect the call while I’m still looking up at Nicholai.

I can’t believe I just hung up on him. I turn off my phone before he has a chance to call back.

Something in Nicholai’s expression makes me think he heard what Brian said. Ashley mentioned that their sense of smell was more sensitive. Nothing was said about hearing.

That phone call from Brian validates one thing. I’m definitely ready to move on with my life. Still not completely sure what that means. But I’ll figure it out. I do like the idea of endless unknown possibilities. I can make my life look like whatever I want.

It’s comfortable here. I don’t want to leave yet. I’m not ready to face what’s waiting for me when I get back. I wonder if I could stay a little longer. Well, that’s something to think about. If there’s nothing keeping me in Arizona, why not stay here? I don’t even have to work in archeology. Not only can I go anywhere. I can do anything.

Max walks into the kitchen from the basement. “Ashley, I have all the walls framed up in the basement. Before I finalize the plumbing and electrical, I want to make sure the bar is where you want it. Can you take a look?”

Ashley tosses the kitchen towel on the island. “Yes. We’re finished in here. Roslyn, want to come too?”

“Sure.” I follow them into the basement.

Walking into the bar area, Max starts pointing out areas of interest as he explains. “This is where you initially told me you wanted the bar, but this wall would work too. On the floor, I’ve taped off the pool table dimensions and the sectional sofa and entertainment center area.
