Fire of the Question

In the days after I heard the nine knocks I was shattered, overwhelmed. I remembered their eerie precision-three groups of three perfectly measured, exactly spaced sounds, each precisely as loud as the one previous. And then there had been a soft double-knock, completely different in tone from the others. It had communicated a distinct sense of finality, and seemed by its lightness of tone not to be a part of the group. The nine knocks were a sort of communication. The tenth was punctuation.

I tried everything to duplicate those knocks. We tossed stones at the house from a distance. I clambered up on the roof and tried to lie down and do it with a stick. In those days there wasn’t even a gutter in which to brace one’s foot.

I tested the sensitivity limits of the automatic lights. There was no way to get to the windows without turning them on. I had people creep up to the house with ladders. No matter how quiet they were, I heard them easily. And once they did get up to the spot where the knocks had come from, nobody could even begin to duplicate what I can only describe as the terrible accuracy of those sounds.

I had people tap from different locations on the wall, thinking that perhaps I had misread taps that had actually been produced from lower down. But it was easy to tell where the knocks had come from. I even called the Audubon Society to find out if there was any species of bird that might peck the side of a house at night. No woodpecker makes sounds like that. What about squirrels, rats, mice, coons? All as unlikely as an insomniac woodpecker, because of the extraordinary precision of the sounds.
