Chapter 6

Pat sat in her home office with her laptop open as she reviewed her notes on the interviews she’d conducted Friday. That was, she reviewed her notes between checking the on-line news media looking for information about the bust at the nail salon, and looking on-line to see what information she could find about Agent Elliott Blackburne. The problem was she was having trouble concentrating; she could still hear his deep voice as he whispered in her ear. He had made the statement, “Don’t make me hunt you down,” sound both sexy and threatening at the same time.

Pat shook her head, she wasn’t some silly schoolgirl, she was forty-seven years old, she had been married before, and she had two grown daughters. “God help me,” she thought, “I have to snap out of this.” And still, that deep bass voice rumbled in her head. She looked at the time displayed on her computer, then leaned back and stretched. Maybe she needed get up and move around a little, get the blood circulating, or something.

As she stood, thinking she would pour out her watered down soda and get a fresh one, she heard the doorbell ring. It was nearing six o’clock, and she wasn’t expecting anyone. She walked to the front door and opened it without even looking to see who was at the door.

“You just open the door without looking? Don’t you know how dangerous that is?”

When she’d seen Agent Blackburne earlier, he was dressed in black cargo pants, boots, and a black t-shirt under a Kevlar vest emblazoned with F B I across his back and chest. He had looked dangerous and commanding with his gun holstered at his waist. He stood in front of her now, wearing an expensive looking top coat over gray slacks. The top coat was unbuttoned and she could see he was wearing a gray turtleneck sweater.

She opened the door wider and with her right hand, motioned for him to enter the room. Then she put the little Sig Saur P320, she held in her left hand, on the table next to the door, and turned toward her guest.

“Agent Blackburne, I think I have a little over an hour before I’m supposed to call you; you didn’t need to hunt me down.”

“Do you always answer the door holding a gun?”

His reaction almost made her laugh. Which was it? Dangerous to answer the door without checking to see who it was, or answering it while holding a gun?

“I’ve had a problem with unwanted visitors in the past.” That was an understatement. Her husband had been involved with, what is it people say, with the wrong crowd when he died. As a result, she’d learned the hard way that some people needed a little incentive when told to leave. “May I take your coat?”

Agent Blackburne removed his topcoat and handed it to her. Pat took it and hung it in the coat closet. She motioned toward the living room. “Please, come in and have a seat.
