A county in focus

At county record offices and archives in the United Kingdom much effort has been made to make records more user-friendly. Using Lincolnshire again as an example, the county records of transported convicts demonstrate both the material available and the approaches to use.

First, for the family historian, there is the information on the website. The database is described, and all researchers owe a debt to C.L. Anderson of the Open University, who produced a book about Lincolnshire convicts to Australia in 2000 (see Bibliography).

The guidance is a great help. Lists of possible problems are given and explained, for instance, referring back to the convict’s court records:

A convict’s place of origin may not refer to the place where he or she was born, or even where they lived, as the courts sometimes merely describe the prisoner as being ‘of’ the place of the crime.
