That evening, Brogan watched Mr. Squeaks very closely.

Cammie toted him around everywhere she went. It was surprising to everyone in the house since she usually had her Isabella doll glued to her hand. Yet Isabella was nowhere to be found.

When Cammie did her homework in the living room, she made sure Mr. Squeaks was sitting next to her. When Cammie played pretend school upstairs in her bedroom, she played the teacher and made the clown take the position of the student.

Brogan wondered if Cammie really did like Mr. Squeaks that much, or if she was just doing all of this to once again rub it in his face that she had something he didn’t. He wouldn’t put it past her to be so obnoxious and petty.

But Brogan couldn’t prevent his mind from wandering. What if Mr. Squeaks really was alive? What if he was somehow manipulating Cammie and taking control of her mind? What if he was secretly earning her trust before forcing her to do things? Terrible things? Honestly, if a living clown doll was real, what else was possible?

Brogan forced a laugh. He shook his head and shrugged his shoulders, dismissing the crazy thoughts.

That’s really all they were. Crazy thoughts.

After all, Brogan hadn’t seen anything unusual in his spying all night, so it was silly to continue thinking this way.

It’s just a clown doll, Brogan reminded himself.

Still, Brogan wanted to know more about Mr. Squeaks. And not just the doll.

The real Mr. Squeaks.

After dinner, Brogan snuck into his parents’ bedroom. He swiped the iPad from the nightstand and took it to his own room to start an internet search.

“Mr. Squeaks the clown,” Brogan said aloud to the device, watching as the words automatically programmed into the iPad’s search bar.

A list of results flashed onto the eleven-inch touchscreen.

Brogan scrolled through the suggested articles. Most of them were news stories about the fatal trapeze accident Liam had mentioned on the bus.

Brogan skimmed through one of the articles, not really getting any new information. It basically summarized what Liam had already told him earlier in the day.

Discouraged, Brogan clicked back and continued scrolling.

Then he stopped.

There was an official link to a circus page called “The Flavio Brothers Circus.”

Brogan opened the link.

A picture of the real Mr. Squeaks appeared on the screen. Immediately, Brogan noticed how much the actual man looked like the clown doll. The man had a bald spot on his head, orange hair on the sides, a purple ringmaster suit, and a wide, toothy smile.

Brogan zoomed in on the small caption written beneath the picture: “The Flavio Brothers Circus extends its best wishes and biggest thanks to Mr. Squeaks, who is retiring after thirty years of love, laughs, and squeaks!”

Below that, there was an email address for readers to send fan letters to Mr. Squeaks.

Brogan saw it as an opportunity. Maybe he could reach out to the real Mr. Squeaks and tell him what was going on in the house. Brogan could explain who he was and what was happening with the Mr.
