Chapter Twenty-Seven

I WAS KEPT BUSY WITH missions during the next three weeks. Thankfully, none of them were as traumatic as the one with the wererabbits. I was still struggling with my guilt and rarely had a reason to smile. Aurora had been trying to cheer me up, but not even pizza and ice cream could lift my mood.

“I have a surprise for you,” my bestie said, waking me from a deep slumber.

“Go away. I’m sleeping,” I mumbled.

“Get up!” she exclaimed, then slapped me on the butt.

It didn’t hurt, but I lifted my head to glower at her. “It’s my birthday, Aurora. Don’t I at least get to sleep in?”

“Nope. Get up and get dressed, or I’ll drag you to the car wearing that ratty old t-shirt.”

“Did Mekhi give you the day off?” I asked. It was Sunday, but the salon was open all weekend. They closed on Mondays to give everyone a break.

“Just get up and eat your breakfast,” she said in exasperation.

Grumbling beneath my breath, I rolled out of bed and pulled on some clothes. She’d poured us both cereal, so I sat down on the couch to eat it. “What’s the surprise?” I asked, trying to dredge up some curiosity.

“It won’t be a surprise if I tell you what it is,” she said slyly. “Make sure you brush your hair before we leave,” she added.

I had enough time to drink a mug of coffee, brush my teeth and hair, then she dragged me to the door. She snagged my kill-bag on the way out and hurried me down to the parking lot. “Put this over your head,” she ordered me and handed me a towel she’d borrowed from our apartment.

“What for?” I whined.

“So you don’t figure out what the surprise is,” she said with an eyeroll. “Just do it,” the demon said in exasperation when I didn’t budge.

Heaving a heavy sigh, I held the towel to my face rather than draping it over my entire head. “How long will it take to get wherever we’re going?” I asked in a surly tone as she started the SUV.

“About half an hour,” she said with glee in her tone.

“This had better be worth it,” I muttered.

“Trust me, it will be,” Aurora said.

I did trust her, which was why I swallowed my protests and subsided into silence. I had to admit, her excited giggles had me intrigued. She drove away from our building without using the navigation system. I wasn’t blessed with the ability to figure out where we were going based on which turns she took.

“Keep your face covered,” Aurora ordered when she finally pulled to a stop.

“Hurry up,” I whined. “The suspense is killing me!”

Giggling madly, she climbed out and rushed around to open my door. She unbuckled my seatbelt like I was a child and helped me out. I couldn’t sense any supernatural creatures nearby, which meant we were in an area occupied by humans. Traffic passed close by, so we were on a main street. She led me to a building and opened the door.
