Radium Springs, located in a strategic place on an important southwestern travel route, has a rich history. Native Americans knew about the hot springs for centuries. The Apaches considered the springs sacred, and it is reported that their famous leader Geronimo camped here. The springs were discovered by whites as they moved into this part of the country following the Rio Grande. Spanish conquistadores stopped at the springs before they headed east through the dreaded Jornada del Muerto (Route of the Dead). In 1865 the US Army built Fort Selden on the banks of the Rio Grande, and soldiers from the fort partook of the hot mineral water. The springs were then made a part of the military reservation and called Selden Springs, with the first bathhouse built in 1887. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad was completed through the area in the 1880s, and the big steam engines stopped at the springs to fill up with water. With the arrival of the railroad and eventual construction of a Harvey House (restaurants, hotels, and other facilities developed for travelers along many railroad lines beginning in the 1870s), the springs received a great deal more attention.
Several new outdoor pools have been built at Radium Springs.
