Chapter Eight

“You stupid, boy.” Elias stepped toward the new guy. “Are you trying to get you both killed?” Lightning cracked in the sky, slamming close to where we were standing. The hairs on my arms stood on end as I gasped.

Fletcher, Conroy, and Meredith stood side by side as if they were preparing for an attack. My uncle almost took a step in my direction, but I shook my head. I wouldn’t allow him to be involved and put everything about our family at risk. This problem was mine alone. He had to stay out of the fight.

The new guy smirked. “My name is Ryan Spelling, her brother. Our mother sent me to get her. That way, we can free our grandfather. If you try to get in my way, there’s only death for all of you.”

“You’re nuts if you think I’m going with you,” I told him. “You pop in here like you own the place, expecting me to leave with you because of some lame-ass claims? You’re insane.” I shook my head, crossing my arms. “I’m staying with Elias until the royals get some semblance of sense in their damn heads.”

“You’re a death mage royal!” Meredith shouted. “You should die now. Having either of you alive is a problem for the rest of the mages. Your kind is a disgrace and should rot in Hell.”

“And Hell is where she will be to rule next to my side when that time comes. But for now, you’re to show her some respect as a mage royal, a death mage royal, and now a demon princess.” Elias glared at them—a glare that dared them to try to go past him.

Too much was happening. Everyone was against the head of the mage royals, but for what? It seemed insane! I was just a girl with no power.

But that wasn’t really true, was it? I did have power now, and Conroy seemed to fear how much of it there was.

“We can chat more tomorrow. For now, I need a shower and some sleep. You guys can fight amongst yourselves,” I said.

The head mages turned to Darius, gleams in their eyes as they planned on giving him their exact thoughts after our stand-off was over.

Not even thinking, I stepped in front of him. “If any harm comes to my family, I promise you, I’ll use every bit of my power to crush all of you. I don’t care what happens to everything around me. It can burn to ash for all I care. I’ll kill all of you without even an ounce of remorse.”

“Ember –” Darius started.

I held up my hand. “I don’t need the demon prince or the death mages on my side to make this happen. Believe me when I say I can feel it in my bones that all it would require is a snap of my fingers and you’d become fertilizer.”

Whatever they saw on my face must have been enough because the head royals backed away, disappearing into the crowd of mages that slowly followed.
