Chapter 3

The day of the wedding, sunlight warmed Analyn’s back as she arrived at the church two hours early. Thankfully, her bridal party—her cousins Jamila and Darlene—arrived to help. Then Grandma Edel showed up. Where was Miranda? She’d be late again. Analyn gathered her bridal team for a pep talk.

“I’ve got assignments for everyone. If we each do our part, we’ll pull this off. Here are your instructions.” She handed out copies of a detailed spreadsheet. The corners of the pages fluttered as a cool, wintry breeze wafted through the half-opened windows.

The team read through Analyn’s complex plan. As they did, the vendors trailed in and gathered by the fountain inside the church. Waiters outfitted in white button-down shirts and pressed black pants stood at attention, ready to serve pre-wedding appetizers to the guests.

The appetizers were Analyn’s idea. She’d always wanted to have special touches like that on her wedding day. She felt blessed to be able to do so, even if this was the second time around.

Yet Analyn wasn’t here to celebrate. She was here to get married. Her sole mission was to ensure this big day went off without a hitch.

“I don’t need no task sheet.” Edel crumpled the paper in her hand. “Been on this planet longer than you. I got a strong memory.”

“I know, but we can’t have any hiccups.” Analyn’s eyebrows knitted.

“Granny, it’s only for today,” Jamila said.

“Harrumph.” Edel rolled her eyes and patted her twisted locks. “We starting with the lighting of the Kwanzaa candle?”

“Of course,” Analyn said. “I’ll get dressed in a minute. I wanna see if Miranda is here yet.”

She left the sanctuary through the rear exit and trekked across a wide expanse of grass lightly dusted with snow. Miranda was in the distance, talking to Corey. Analyn’s steps slowed, not wanting Corey to see her before the wedding. What were they talking about?

Analyn hid behind a crepe myrtle and craned her head to eavesdrop, but she couldn’t hear a thing.

Her grandmothers’ advice filtered through her conscience. Corey and Miranda weren’t an item. Were they?

I promised myself I wasn’t gonna worry about this anymore. Yet Corey had said Miranda was unstable. The only thing Miranda could be unstable about was her recent breakup. Was that why she’d clung to Corey last night?

Miranda’s laughter carried over the blustery air, and Analyn’s chest tightened. Crap.

“No. No. No. I’m imagining things. There’s nothing going on,” she whispered to herself. Memories of her last conversation with her ex-husband bubbled to the surface.

This marriage isn’t working for me anymore, Analyn. I’m sorry, he had said.

She pressed her hand against the trunk of the crepe myrtle tree. “If there’s a God in this world, please don’t let me go through that heartache again.”

Corey walked away with a blissful look on his face. Why? He never looked that way with Analyn. Miranda headed in Analyn’s direction. She took a deep breath, smoothed the front of her taupe sheath dress, and met her maid of honor.

Surprise flitted across Miranda’s features. “What are you doing here?”

“Looking for you.
