“What time is it?” I asked Bryce as I picked up a cup of coffee from the table.

“About two thirty,” he said. “Sunset is at six fifteen tonight so we should be packed and ready to hit the woods by five.” He sighed heavily.

“What’s up?” I asked, glancing over at him as I settled next to Sebastian on the sofa.

“I don’t think we should take Sebastian with us,” he said. He walked over and sat on the arm of the chair, his gaze focused on the cup in his hand.

“Can I ask why?” Sebastian asked calmly, his tone indicating that he wasn’t at all surprised by Bryce’s idea.

“I think it’s going to get pretty dangerous, you already have a tie to at least one of the pack members, and I don’t trust Cole to stay focused if you get in trouble out there.”

“Hey,” I said indignantly. “When have I ever been compromised in a fight?”

“Never,” Bry admitted. “But then, I’ve never seen you like this with anyone before.”

“Like what?” I asked.

“Like…this.” He waved his hand in our direction. “You and Sebastian, there’s something between you two and I don’t want it to affect you while we’re up against a pack of panthers.”

“He needs to be there,” I argued. “He has to be the one to kill the bastard that bit him.”

“Dammit, Cole.” Bry sighed again. “We’ve been over this. There is no proof that killing the were that bites you kills the infection. It doesn’t even make any sense. The poison is already in him.”

“So we’re not even going to try? We’re just going to let him turn and hope for the best?”

“Do I get a say in this?” Sebastian interrupted.

“No,” Bryce and I both said without even looking over at him.

“Excuse me,” Sebastian said, his tone even but his voice louder. “I’m a grown man and I can make my own decisions.”

“Not with this,” I said, glancing at him. “You got yourself into this mess. In fact, you went out there trying to get killed. You’ve lost the right to have a voice in this argument.”

“There’s no argument,” Bryce said with a tone of finality. “He’s not going.”

“Yes, he is,” I said, getting to my feet. “We have to at least try, Bryce. Please.” I wasn’t very good at begging, but if that’s what it took to get Bry to understand how important it was to me then I was willing to try.

It was true that the myth didn’t make much sense, but so little of what we knew really did. Vampires, ghosts, witches…none of it sounded real but they were. Being an exterminator meant taking certain things on faith. This was one of those things I had to believe, because I needed it to be true.

Not that it would necessarily be the end of the world if Sebastian stayed a were-panther.

It was very likely that he would be fine when he turned, like ninety percent of the other shifters in the world. It was the chance that he could be part of the rogue ten percent that scared the hell out of me.
