Another week went by without really having time to talk to Rune. I woke up every morning, and he was fast asleep next to me, but by the time I came back, he was already gone. The closest thing I had to a relationship with him right now was seeing the Faegram posts Rayna tagged him in.

When I saw the one where Rune was wiping Rebeka’s red lipstick from his mouth while exiting the firefly exhibit, where Rune and I had shared our first kiss, I cried myself to sleep. I had woken up with a headache, my eyes were dry and itchy, and my chest ached.

My workout was awful, and I told Magnar that my shoulders were aching so much they had kept me up last night and that I had a headache. He looked like he didn’t buy it, but he let me spend the rest of the morning session meditating.

I wasn’t able to quiet my mind, though. All I could see were the never-ending images with him and Rebeka with the stupid hashtags #TrueLove #NewPowerCouple #RelationshipGoals.

Thankfully, Hilda and Annabeth had been helping a lot with the ball. The morning after the family dinner, we secured the Botanical Garden for the ball, and their event coordinator was part fae and loved the idea of an Elysian mixer. She went way above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. It took so much stress off of me that I now had the time to properly fall into a pit of despair.

Annabeth and Hilda swore up and down that Rune was still putting off any advances that Rebeka was throwing his way, and he was furious after Rebeka kissed him in the firefly room. Especially because before they’d gone, he had gushed about our first kiss there.

He apparently had even asked the girls to stop putting misleading pictures of him on social media, and they’d made excuses or said they were just documenting their trip. Rebeka’s mother insisted on an active social media presence for her daughter’s PR team to work with.

“It’s manipulative bullshit,” Hilda said while we were all sitting around the conference table. “We know it. He knows it. Everyone knows it. But when she said her mother demanded pictures, Rune’s hands were tied.”

“He is suffering too,” Annabeth said.

“Yes, the pictures with his arm around her and the lipstick stains definitely show he is in pain,” I deadpanned.

“He actually kind of is,” Hilda said. “Rebeka and Rayna are insisting he take them out to do different things all day and then all night.”

Annabeth nodded. “We try to tag along at night to kind of limit the impact they can have and to give Rune a bit of a buffer.”

“And because it annoys them, and pissing them off brings me joy,” Hilda added.

“But during the day, they run off before we even know there’s a plan.”

I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. “It’s okay, girls. Keeping Rune faithful isn’t your job.”

“He isn’t being unfaithful,” Hilda said, a bit more edge in her tone than I was expecting.
