Chapter 15

Grace’s tension melted into need when the door closed behind Logan. “Sarah,” she whispered. “I’m scared.”

Familiar arms wrapped her up and held her while minutes and apprehension slipped away like sand in an hourglass.

Sarah’s voice soothed. “It’s okay baby. We’re going to get everything back to normal real soon, I promise you.”

Grace still couldn’t manage more than a thin whisper. “I thought it was him.”

Sarah stroked her hair. “He’s dead, Grace. I know with absolute certainty that he can’t ever hurt you again.”

“I was so sure it was him leaning over me, smiling in that secret way, you know? But you’re absolutely, positively, certain it was the doctor?”

Sarah drew back far enough for Grace to see the honesty in her eyes. “Baby, I spoke with Dr. Kelton less than thirty minutes ago. He’s barely ten years older than you. If Monsieur were still alive, he’d be at least sixty or seventy by now. But I assure you,” she hesitated and then delivered each word individually. “He. Is. Dead.”

Grace nodded, the simple logic and Sarah’s confidence helped to ease the grip of the old nightmare, allowed her to contemplate the here and now. “What’s going on, Sarah? Why am I here, hooked up to all these machines?” She turned to scrutinize the walls lined with electronic gadgetry. “This is more than just a hospital, isn’t it?”

Sarah stayed seated on the bed, one of Grace’s hands held firmly between her own. “Let’s start with how you got here. What’s the last thing you remember before you woke up in a hospital the first time?”

Grace laid her head back against the pillows and closed her eyes, giving some thought to the fact the room was being monitored. She kept her voice carefully steady when she finally began to speak.

“I was with Logan. At my place. I had a splitting headache. Needed meds.” A handful. “But I was making tea first.” Stupid. Trying to be normal. “That’s the last thing I remember.” The last thing I want to remember.

Sarah shook her head, trying to sort the words and thoughts coming to her interwoven, jumbled together. “What kind of meds?”

“Just the usual. Well the strongest of the usual, actually.” Even they don’t work anymore.

“Names?”

“Don’t know.” Don’t want to know. Pick a color, mix and match, who the hell cares?

Sarah’s eyebrows rose slightly. “You take drugs strong enough to knock you out and you don’t know what they are?”

“Affirmative.” Back off.

No. “Talk to me, Grace.”

“No.”

“Grace.”

She fisted a handful of bed sheet. “When the pain fucking consumes me, I take anything I can get. I’d rather be unconscious than endure daggers piercing the suffocating sludge in my head. If I stay awake until the puking starts, I pray for death.” She inhaled dramatically. “The old quack set me up with a whole cabinet full of different stuff to try. He keeps tabs on how much I use, tells me how to mix them effectively.”

“How long have you been doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Keeping me in the dark. Taking drugs, filtering your thoughts.
