Oops, I forgot to open the door. Rookie mistake.

Something hard bounced off my chest. Opening my eyes, I saw a pair of zip ties sitting on the floor next to my cot. Blinking a few times, I glared at the snitch wolf. I'd gotten used to being alone in the several days that had passed without any contact.

"You have a visitor. Please refuse to put on your restraints so I can turn her away."

Her? Lucy was here? I sat up and forced myself to casually scoop up the ties and put them on. I heard the wolf grumbling as he opened the door and led me to a visitation room. A woman I didn't recognize sat on the other side of the glass with a folder.

"Graham, thanks for meeting me. I'm your lawyer, Valerie, but you can call me Val." She gestured at my seat.

After getting settled, I looked her over. She appeared to be human, but mated to a shifter. I could smell him all over her. "So who are you and why are you here?"

"We have to keep the introductions short. I only have a few minutes before they decide to march you back to your cell. I know you can tell I'm human, but before I met my mate, I was a lawyer at a prestigious law firm. Now I've turned my focus to shifters and mating rights."

"Wait, did you say mating rights?" This female was a powerhouse, pushing through all the background and getting straight to the details.

"I did and stop interrupting. They've violated your rights by arresting you without filing charges, not providing a court-appointed lawyer, and denying you the means to contact legal defense. Now, I've corrected that, but you're not allowed to contact Lucy or any other human aside from me because I'm your lawyer. They can't legally restrict access to me."

"Can you give Lucy a message from me?" The sad look she gave me felt like a boulder falling on me.

"I can, but I don't think she'll be receptive to receiving it. They've released slanderous statements about you to anyone who will listen, including sending someone to talk to your mate already. I'm afraid that's my fault. If I hadn't gotten involved, they would have let you slip silently into obscurity. Now that I'm trying to get you released, they're trying to ruin you."

Icy rage burned through me. They'd hurt my mate… no, my lies had hurt her. If I'd been honest with her and told her upfront about my past, maybe she would have forgiven me, but not like this. Reaching up to drag my fingers through my beard brought my other hand with it. I tried to process everything she was saying, but only one thought kept bouncing around my brain. I'd failed my mate. The asshole who didn't even believe in the rare Tsigo but named his life's work after it blew his chance from the gods. Shit, I didn't deserve Lucy, and she sure as hell deserved a mate better than me.
