Mara couldn’t believe she was having such a good time. She laughed at one of Sally’s outrageous theatre stories as she sipped her Bellini.

Sally was dressed as stylishly as last night in an elegant white silk shirt and grey slacks paired with a cashmere capelet. She had a presence, people watched her, almost as if they believed her to be somebody they should know—an actress or a socialite—and they were trying to figure out if they recognized her.

But despite the elegant shell, she was genuinely nice and surprisingly fun. Sally had dropped the highbrow New York accent, settling into the soft honeyed twang of a proper southern belle. She loved to talk, and her voice was a pleasure to hear.

Mara had expected an inquisition from the moment she sat at the elegant table at the trendy bistro Sally selected near the Borough Market. Who is Felix Dubois? What was all that business at the baron’s penthouse about? How did you meet Jackson? Are you dating? What are your intentions? Do you like kids?

But Sally had asked none of those things, instead telling her anecdotes about her life, entertaining tales of her fellow actors, and the various jobs she’d done for her stepson, mixing in tantalizing tidbits about Jack’s childhood. She even sprinkled in tidbits on the techniques she had employed to get Felix to talk.

Eventually, Mara’s curiosity got the better of her. “Sally, why did you ask to have lunch with me? Was it to give me advice on how to break down a suspect without their knowledge?”

Laughing, Sally threw her head back. “No, of course not, sugar,” she said, the endearment tripping off her tongue so naturally that Mara didn’t even blink. “You need a bit more practice, but I think your instincts are very good. Jack thinks so, too, no matter how he behaved last night.”

She leaned forward to put a manicured hand on Mara’s arm. “He didn’t say anything to upset you after I left last night, did he? If he was critical, I hope you know it didn’t have anything to do with you and more to do with him being mad with jealousy. I was tickled pink to see it, just tickled.”

Caught off guard, Mara blushed. She couldn’t very well say they didn’t discuss her performance or his and instead had scorching hot sex all night. “I’m not interested in Henry,” she said, deciding it was a safer answer.

“But you are interested in Jack?” It wasn’t a question.

Mara flushed, feeling like she was fourteen years old again. “I, uh, it’s complicated.”

“No doubt it is.” This was said with an indulgent smile. Sally waved a languid hand. “After all, this is Jack we’re talking about. He’s not happy unless he’s neck deep in intrigue. It’s why we get on so well. I’ve often said he inherited his love of drama from me, much to his father’s dismay. But I haven’t seen him ever behave the way he did last night.”

Uncertain what to say, Mara sipped her drink to avoid answering.
