Chapter Nine

A growl echoed from inside Riordon’s office. He’d stormed in fifteen minutes ago and had been seated as his desk, reading through papers, clicking on the keyboard.

Riordon threw his pen on the desktop and huffed out a heavy breath.

Don’t ask, don’t ask, don’t ask, Kyra told herself. You need to disengage yourself from his life, not get twisted more deeply into it.

Except, she couldn’t let him suffer—even if it was something as mundane as the files.

“Something I can help with?” she asked from the outer office, trying to sound helpful and not like she was going to wince if his problem was all about his missing mate. Me.

“I don’t freakin’ understand how files can just disappear.” He stood up. Kyra followed suit and trailed him—at a distance because her perfume was particularly pungent this morning—as he stormed to the filing cabinet. “And it’s the files I need. That’s weird right?”

“I—”

“It’s crazy. I’m trying not to be paranoid about the whole situation but it feels like it’s deliberate. And every contract that is coming up for reinstatement is missing and the new contracts seem so wildly out of proportion to what I’ve allotted in the budget. But if I can’t produce the old contracts, I have to accept their offer, right? Arrgh, this is so frustrating.” He slammed his fists against the filing cabinets and the drawers in the towers beside him popped open. “See? Anyone could come in here.”

Kyra remembered the files in Ryan’s office.

“It could be an honest mistake,” Kyra offered. “Like someone took them and doesn’t remember they have them or doesn’t know you need them? Why don’t I send out a company-wide email and ask everyone to search their offices for any files from the executive suite? Kind of a file amnesty?”

“Fine. See if that helps.” He smacked his fist against the top of the cabinet and the metal caved in just a little. He sighed. “Sorry about that. I’ll get that fixed.”

Kyra nodded and hurried out of the office.

She sat down and sent the email to everyone in the building.

Within a few minutes—such is the power of the Alpha’s office—several people walked in with random file folders. As noon rolled around, Ryan strolled into the office. Strange that Micah and Mitchell weren’t there. She rarely saw Ryan without his minions.

“Want to grab lunch?” he said, calling loud enough for Riordon to hear. Kyra noticed it was something he did if Riordon’s door was open.

“No, I brought lunch from home.” She tapped the bag next to her desk.

Ryan shook his head.

“That’s so basic,” he muttered. Far enough into the outer area, he poked his head around Riordon’s door. “Riordon, can I grab you lunch?” The Alpha stood at the window looking out.

“What? Uh, no.” He wave his hand, dismissing the offer without turning around. “Thanks.”

Ryan’s body tensed and he pulled himself up to his full height. Kyra was familiar with the motion, knowing it meant Ryan was pissed and about to launch into a tirade. Except he didn’t.
