Chapter Twelve
âHey.â
âOh. Hey.â Ava pulled one of the earbuds out of her ear and paused the music on her phone as she slowed her pace on the exercise bike in the hotelâs workout room.
âYou work out,â Travis said.
She shrugged. âMostly, itâs stress relief, although I recognize that in a few years, Iâll be grateful for this habit.â
They were two weeks into the tour. Theyâd traveled along the East Coast to Washington DC, then cut across to Louisville. Now they were making their way north againâCincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Cleveland. It was a grueling schedule, but honestly, Ava was having the time of her life.
Except for whatever was going on with Travis.
Scratch that. Except for the nothing that was going on with Travis.
Speaking of scratching, he scratched his jaw, a habit sheâd come to realize he did when he was nervous or uncomfortable. Probably because they were currently alone in the hotelâs tiny workout room, and for the last two weeks, theyâd done a remarkable job of avoiding each other as much as humanly possible.
âI prefer to go jogging,â he said, âbut itâs too damn cold here for my taste.â He jabbed his thumb over his shoulder. âParker and Sam are probably out there, breathing ice into their lungs, but Iâm not fucking crazy.â
She laughed, because for a scant moment, this felt like it did the day they met, before she knew he was a rock star and he knew she was his bandâs publicistâs sister.
He laughed too, and she damn near swooned on the spot. Ava had never swooned a day in her life.
Their laughter faded into uncomfortable silence, save the sound of Travis still scratching his jaw.
âSo, listen,â he blurted. âThis kind of sucks.â
âThe tour? Why?â Sheâd thought it was going beautifully. They were selling out venue after venue after venue. The fans loved them. Music downloads spiked every time they played live. Maria had to constantly reorder merch.
âNot the tour. This.â He waved his finger between himself and Ava.
Oh.
âI hate that everything is so uncomfortable.â
You and me both, buddy.
âWhat do you think about calling a truce?â
She cocked her head. âWe arenât exactly fighting.â They were circling each other, avoiding each other, refusing to speak to each other. It was maddening, but it wasnât fighting.
âBut we arenât getting along either. I just wantâ¦I want to go back to the day we met.â
Ava sucked in a breath through her nose.
Lord, yes! She was ready to vault off this bike and into his arms.
âThe friends part,â he clarified, and her stuttering heart suddenly deflated.
âFriends,â she echoed.
He nodded eagerly. âEven when you take the amazing sex out of the picture, I had a great time that day. Because of you. I want that back. I want us to be cool with each other again.â
But I want the amazing sex too. Still, it wasnât an unreasonable request. In fact, it was quite the reasonable ask, and she ought to be giving him kudos for being so brave as to make the first move. Sheâd obviously not intended to approach him anytime soon, despite how frustrated she was.
